UV Equipments can reduce high TOC levels – concern in many commercial and high purity water treatment applications – in the final product water. TOC levels are reduce by exposures to high energy output of the UV light range, Which causes photo-oxidization. A 254 nm Lamp can initiate photo-oxidation, but the reduction is only nominal.

A UV light emitted at 185 nm is most effective for TOC reduction because it produces hydroxyl free radicals in various degrees of photochemical excitement. At proper intensity level, this oxidizers the organic molecules by breaking down the chemical bonds primary to O². Acceptable levels of TOC in the final product water are being lowered in high purity application. 185 nm UV lamp that are effective on micro-organisms and will also removal of chlorine, ozone and total organic carbon.

The Mercury arc in low pressure lamp generator energy at other wavelength as shown in the illustration. Relative to the 185 nm line. It produce much lower amount of energy at 185 nm this emission is capable of producing ozone in air. Ozone production of a low pressure lamp depends on the transmittance of the glass envelope.

Standard lamps are available in a THREE choices of Quartz:
“L” – No Ozone
“H” – Moderate generation of ozone
“VH” – Very high ozone output.

The lamps are supplied with ceramic bases. Which are resistant to UV and Ozone? They will not burn or deteriorate, and they eliminate quartz sleeve fogging.

Ozone Action :- “VH’” germicidal lamps generate energy at 185nm in addition to the 254nm line. This UV emission produces abundant amounts of ozone in air. Ozone is an extremely active oxidizer & destroys microorganisms on contact. Ozone also acts as a deodorizer.

TOC Reduction :- 
TOC Reduction Total organic carbon (TOC) reduction with UV energy is more complex than inactivation of microbes or destruction of residual ozone. There are different mechanisms at work, dependant on the type of UV lamp used. Where monochromatic 185nm UV lamp systems are used, the working mechanism is the direct photolysis of water. This process creates powerful hydroxyl (OH-) radicals that attack organic compounds and break them into acid-based groups which can readily be absorbed by ion exchange systems. If complete oxidation occurs, CO2 and H2O are the final products. This mechanism functions in a thin water layer due to the poor transmission of short wavelengths in water.

OZONE

Ozone is efficiently generated by ultraviolet radiation having wavelengths below 200 nanometers and, most specifically, at 185 nanometers. Ozone is excited by other UV radiation and is destroyed by ultraviolet emissions at 253.7 nanometers. It is noteworthy that organic molecules are also excited by ultraviolet energy across the spectrum. The most efficient design of UVC equipment uses a combination of wavelengths to achieve a balance between ozone generation, decomposition and molecular excitation.

Ozone is a most useful tool by itself, and when used in conjunction with UVC, the overall decontamination process works synergistically
